The mechanical sanding process is divided into pre-sanding and fine sanding. Waterproof sandpaper, sanding sheets or sanding discs are generally used for this. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing. The material is removed by cutting from coarse to fine. As the grit size decreases, the sanding is gradually finer in order to remove the previous deformation of the surface with each sanding stage. This is repeated until the surface roughness is achieved that allows a smooth transition to the polishing process. SCAN-DIA offers a large selection of high-quality abrasives. Silicon carbide SiC is a very frequently used abrasive medium. Diamond is also available as a harder abrasive, bonded in pre-grinding foils or pre-grinding discs. The same applies to cubic boron nitride CBN, which is a particularly suitable abrasive for ferrous materials.
