Similar to grinding, the materialographic polishing process is based on material removal by cutting. However, it is polished with much smaller grain sizes, which means that the removal rate is much lower than with grinding. The process is divided into pre-polishing and final polishing. In one or more steps, the polishing is gradually refined until any remaining deformation of the sample is noticeably reduced and scratches are no longer visible, even microscopically. Only loose, abrasive grit is used here, which is applied to a polishing cloth. At the end of the polishing process, the material sample shows a polished surface suitable for chemical etching and subsequent microstructure assessment. In order to achieve such exact polished surfaces, SCAN-DIA offers a comprehensive range of products and only uses high-quality components for the production of polishing agents.
